To shave, or not to shave: that is the question.

Ever wondered why Thai girls don't shave their legs?

It was a question triggered by my friends and me a couple of weeks ago.

Then another friend prompted another question "Why do we have to?"

I don't know why either. But shaving the legs is obviously not a standard practice here in Thailand. Some do but it's normal if you don't. I'd like to think the vast majority of girls here don't shave their legs and it's not, in Thailand, revolting in any means.

A friend who was an exchange student in Spain for a year once told me that in Spain it is definitely a no-no for girls with hairy legs, which I'd like to think it's the same thing in The States.

A couple of friends who were exchange students in Japan added another information that not only Japanese girls shave their legs, they also shave their arms AND hands. Every single one of them does. Otherwise you might be called "junguru" which is originally derived from the English word "jungle"!

I was armed with this information before I went to Japan but it's still amazing. Shaving legs is somewhat understandable but extending it to the arms is just...WOW. It made me secretly define Japanese girls as a specie with no revelation of hair (except on their heads, of course).

Gentlemen, I think you're so lucky that you can be all hairy without having to make a fuss about trimming, plucking out, tweezing, shaving, pulverizing, or waxing.

Speaking of the latter one, some friends have been trying to coax me with the benefits of waxing, but I don't quite dare to do so, simply because

a) I'm not a masochist.
b) It doesn't sound appealing to me. Ever watched a movie "What women want" starring Mel Gibson? Well, watch his reaction when he tries to wax for the first time and you'll understand how scary this can get.
c) I'm a chicken.

I think c) pretty much summed it up.

Being a girl is not easy, people. Believe me. We even get scrutinized by the amount of hair we possess, can you imagine that?

Well, sorry that this post neither has point nor conclusion, I only initiate the topic which I'm a bit curious about myself. Do you find girls with hairy legs a major turn-off or repulsive? Also, If you have some interesting theories about why Thai girls don't shave legs, let me know.

Well I have to say that hairy legs in a girl is somewhat replusive to me and in the UK. Equally the Teutonic habit of not shaving the armpits is also a no no.

As for Thai girls well I guess its up to you since body hair is part of our evolution.

I think you might find most Western guys prefer the shaved version but no 7 o'clock shadow please!

As for your other bits again I would say its quite personal and up to you and perhaps your partner.

i wax my legs, but only because i like wearing miniskirts & i like smooth legs. but i don't like, freak out if there's hair there or if i hadn't waxed them in a couple weeks.

i think the main reason thai girls don't really shave/wax their legs is because the hair isn't that noticeable. or noticeably ugly. you know? most girls have fine, thin hair.

p.s. waxing doesn't hurt as much as you think. unless you have a LOT of hair, like Mel Gibson does. lol.

I often wonder this very point, although Thai women don't have particularly hairy legs it isn't attractive when they are unshaven so you should do it.

What gets me is the plucking of armpit hair - that is masochistic.

I'd go without shaving because once you start it never ends.

I've never noticed hair on a Thai woman's legs because the hair is so fine it's just not noticeable.

I have to agree with the plucking of the armpit hair. I had never seen that until I came to Thailand. My girlfriend was plucking one day and I couldn't even remotely see what she was pulling.

People always look for something they don't have physically or mentally.
Simply aussme the number of hairy girl in the western world would be far higher than in Thailand or most of Aisan countries. It comes without surprised that lots of wemen would wax it and treat it as kinda fashion.
Would you really notice if any thai girls with hairy leg walking around siam square? If not, why bothering this?

I have known many more Thai women who remove body hair, than leave it all up to nature. It is just that it is not as obvious, as with western women, and they are reluctant to admit to their actions.

The notion that all men revel in having one eyebrow, bushy ears and noses, and a shag rug growing on their backs is not entirely correct either. The "players" often take great care about how they look and that means attention to body hair among other things.

Even after marrying my wife continues to help with regular maintenance. As one gets older hair stubbornly wants to migrate to unattractive locations. Getting married is no excuse to stop tending the garden. Being single and looking, should be a major motivator for gardening, however.

Hi Natta,

It's been a long time since my last visit to Thailand and having had no opportunity to be in very close contact with local women I haven't paid attention towards their shaving habits. However, I don't remember seeing around hairy armpits (within the tourist usual itineraries) so I believe the locals do shave to some extent.

As per their western counterparts, or I should say those living in the western part of the world, shaving is routine. Some prefer waxing but I haven't found many of them.
I live in the UK and nowadays women shave everything they can, including the pubic area, where they leave only a small strip in the front or nothing at all. I see that shaving their arms is also becoming increasingly popular and more women do it.

Personally, I like the shaved skin. It's not a matter of the way it looks, probably it is more about the way it feels and also the fact that it is done with the intention of being more attractive.

I hope this helps.

I live in the USA and wish more women would STOP shaving. I find women with hairy legs and underarms particularly sexy. Try not shaving for a couple months, you may enjoy it.

Cheers!
